About Proton OS

A practical way to keep working with the technology you already own.

Proton OS is a lightweight, business-ready operating system for compatible PCs that no longer run well on newer versions of Windows. It comes with everyday applications, automatic updates, and built-in security, so you can spend less time configuring the computer and more time using it.

For businesses that depend on older Windows software, Proton OS also includes compatibility tools that may let those applications continue running. We recommend testing every essential program, printer, scanner, and other device before replacing the existing installation.

What Proton OS Includes

Familiar from day one

The clean desktop is designed for people coming from Windows. Essential tools are preconfigured, so your team can get back to work without first becoming Linux experts.

Everyday tools included

An office suite, PDF reader, modern browser, and other common utilities are ready to use. You can handle routine work without hunting down basic applications.

Your business data stays yours

Proton OS does not include background telemetry, and it does not require a cloud account. You retain control of the computer and the information stored on it.

Updates handled automatically

Software and security updates can run automatically, helping keep the system current without adding another recurring task to your day.

No license or subscription

Proton OS is free and open source. A professional installation or optional support plan may carry a service fee, and Windows applications or the Windows environment may still require valid licenses.

Security configured by default

An active firewall, AppArmor enforcement, automatic security updates, and disabled remote access reduce common risks from the moment the system is installed

A stable, lightweight foundation

Proton OS is built on Debian 13 and tuned to use fewer system resources. That can make compatible hardware feel more responsive and remain useful longer.

Keep using compatible Windows software

Proton OS includes tools that can run many Windows applications inside a real Windows environment.
Because compatibility varies, business-critical programs and peripherals should be tested before migration.

Before you switch, verify what your business depends on.

Not every Windows application or peripheral will work in every configuration. Make a list of the programs, printers, scanners, databases, and files that are essential to your operation. Test them before changing the current computer, and keep a complete backup with a recovery plan.
